Sedimentation - Movies

Non-equilibrium sedimentation of colloids on the particle scale

The movies on this webpage are from a joint collaboration of Paddy Royall, Joachim Dzubiella, Matthias Schmidt, and Alfons van Blaaderen and are obtained (by Paddy!) with confocal microscopy of sedimenting colloidal particles.

Movie 1 (mov, avi file format): Time-evolution of the Rayleigh-Taylor-like instability of a sedimenting dispersion. The field of view is 225x70microns; the playback speed is accelerated by a factor of 48. The image (xz) plane is upright such that gravity points along the vertical direction. The initial state is an equilibrated sample turned upside down.

Movie 2 (mov, avi file format): Time-evolution of the lateral structure of the dispersion exhibiting a Rayleigh-Taylor-like instability. The field of view is 145x145 microns and playback is accelerated by a factor of 60. The image (xy) plane lies flat.
